As Abby grabbed the poker to stoke the fire in the massive stone fireplace in Lynette and Trevor’s great room, Regan prepared two cups of pumpkin spice coffee with heavy cream from the other side of the kitchen island. She might not be a chef like Baz, but she knew how to prepare a great cup of coffee. She sprayed spirals of whipped cream over the top of each beverage. Holding the handles of both cups with one hand, she used the other to grab the platter of snacks Abby had put together after the shuttling of children had been completed: a circle of crackers, a pile of huge strawberries, a wheel of brie, and two red velvet cupcakes topped with heaping mounds of cream cheese icing.

“This looks so good,” she said while Abby replaced the poker in the rack next to the hearth.

The two of them fell to opposite ends of the plump brown sofa, and Abby yanked the coffee table closer before accepting her cup from Regan. A moment later, she descended into giggles.

“Regan, you have whipped cream all over your nose and upper lip.”

She laughed and used her sleeve to wipe it off. “I was eager.” Picking up a cupcake, she offered it to Abby. “Dessert first?”

“Of course.”

The two of them silently dug into their cupcakes, moaning with pleasure in perfect unison, then cutting up with laughter.

“So tell me about Baz,” Abby said, pausing to lick frosting from her finger. “Funny you should ask as you did that,” she replied, pointing at her friend’s hand. “He actually offered me a taste of pesto off his finger.”

Abby’s eyes flickered with amusement, then narrowed with questions. “Did you?”

“No,” she declared. “I don’t lick my own fingers. I’m going to lick his just because he can cook?” She grinned. “And let me tell you, the boy can cook.”

“So you mentioned.”

“It’s worth repeating. Craig was pretty great in the kitchen … not as great as he thought he was, but still. I don’t remember ever enjoying anything he made as much as that meal with Baz.”

“That’s because you like him more than you liked Craig.”

Regan chuckled. “I liked him very much when I thought he was faithful and genuine.”

“Until he wasn’t.”

“And then I didn’t.” Regan finished her cupcake, then offered a finger smeared with frosting to Abby, who gave her a face full of Blue Steel.

“Are you serious? I’m not licking your finger.”

Regan shrugged and grabbed a napkin. “This is what I’m saying. Even best friends don’t lick each other’s fingers.”

Abby turned the platter and dove into the crackers and brie. As Regan followed suit, Abby said, “Terrible about Dean, isn’t it?”

“I can’t imagine what Iris is going through. She must be losing her mind.” “She even asked me to pray with her.”

“Did she?”

“Yeah. We were on the phone for nearly an hour.” Abby shook her head.

“She loves him so much.”

“They’re like yin and yang. I can’t even visualize one without the other, can you?”

“I won’t even try. I’m not going there,” she said.
